Conecta: Miami Arts is proud to the be working with Beacon College Prep in developing an exciting and profound cultural arts program for their student body. As per the Arts Education Partnership (AEP), mounting research evidence confirms that students in schools with arts-rich learning environments academically outperform their peers in arts-poor schools. At Beacon College Prep, demographics do not determine destiny: instead, they educate and empower their students to determine their own. Given that aim, their model is designed to close the achievement gap facing low-income students, and aggressively accelerate learning once they’re caught up.
Therefore, Beacon College Prep has engaged Conecta to develop a multi-faceted cultural arts program that compliments their curriculum and holistic approach to education which prioritizes developing their students’ independence and self-advocacy. This cultural arts program consists of a number of initiatives such as access to cultural arts institutions, dedicated workshops and eventually an integrated program that will bring the arts into daily classroom activity.
Conecta is activating phase one of the cultural program during the 2017-2018 school year by reaching beyond the school walls to arts and cultural institutions in order to expose students to different art forms in different venues located throughout Miami-Dade County. This phase of the program directly focuses on developing, maintaining and providing Beacon College Prep’s students access to Miami’s cultural heritage. By providing access to the arts at an early age, Conecta will directly contribute to the development of a generation who will engage the arts with purpose and will in turn mold the future cultural landscape of Miami.
Some of the confirmed participating cultural and arts institutions supporting this program include the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County, Miami Book Fair, HistoryMiami Museum, the Sandrell Rivers Theater, Little Haiti Book Festival and New World Symphony.
